defining a center

seattle waterfront, wa

what is center?

is affected by physical, social and economic circumstance. athens and rome grew around the agora and forum, which singly served as the center of civic life. medieval towns originally expanded from market squares or church plazas, which had their own origins in roman military camp planning. later in the larger cities of the second millennium, planned architectural interventions brought us the piazza di san marco in venice, il campidoglio in rome, and later the palais royal, place de la concorde in paris, and london's covent garden. in vienna the sequence of rings avenues were the result of an urban design intervention implemented during rapid city expansion. this was due to the destruction of medieval walls in the mid nineteenth century. the cities of modern europe: london, paris, rome, vienna have become pocketed with multiple centers over time, similarly to large metropolitan centers in north america.
