urban housing

hige-density urban housing

in an industrial society, where the pressure of population and increased land values dictate higer density residential neighborhoods, compact communityies become an attractive alternative for soloving the needs of contemporary urban housing. the terms urban villages, neo-traditional mixed-use developments, sustainable pedestrain-oriented, and livable communities are increasingly emerging in the vocabualry of city planning and design professionals. the inherent qualities these communities represent are compactness and a socially intimate atmosphere, with homes closely connected to social and economic institutions and community facilities within convenient walking distance, assuring the continuity of human activities in an efficient and meaningful way.

when it becomes essential to put residential units close together and when occupants must share the immediate home environment and surrounding amenities with other residents, the ground areas needed to support domestic actibities become semiprivate in nature. the design of the semipribate areas is critical to the success of multifamily housing, yet is often the last thing to be considered by architects and planners alike. the inherent identity associated to these spaces, however, is the function of their physical definition and of the amount of control and autonomy that inhabitants can exercise both features that should be included in all stages of planning. cardful organization and autonomy over these areas can foster a secse of place and intimacy between the grouop of users and render a predictable and manageable invironment at resicential scale. the vitality and proper functioning of these spaces depend on the amount of control that users can claim in their environment.
