Overview:

Deuter is quite possibly the most overlooked artist of the Krautrock genre and 'D', his first album, is certainly an overlooked, unappreciated gem of Kraut madness. The entire album was composed, arranged, performed, and produced solely by Deuter with no outside help. It's not hard to imagine the opening track 'Babylon' as a companion piece to Amon Duul II's 'Restless Skylight-Transistor-Child' off of Tanz Der Lemminge. NOTE THE IDENTICAL BASSLINE! The second track, 'Der Turm/Fluchtpunkt' is a mind trip utilizing creative panning and a distorted guitar that sounds extremely Faust-ian ('Don't Take Roots' off of '71 Minutes'). 'Krishna Eating Fish and Chips' displays Deuter's affection for Eastern instruments, a love affair which would later dominate his career and his life. 'Atlantis' is a journey through a sound effects-laden land filled with natural sounds and echoed percussion. Finally, the album closes with 'Gammastrahlen-Lamm' which is a soft keyboard exploration. This track ends with the sound of a Bavarian Kuckuck clock, obviously thrown in for good measure because the album was released on the Kuckuck label! [4.5/5 Doug]

Overview:

Recorded only a year after 'D', 'Aum' represents a huge step in Deuter's musical growth and approach to music. 'Aum' can be considered the first New Age recording as it is a reflection of Deuter's love of nature and includes many tapes of birds, wind and water which Deuter recorded by himself at private/personal locations. This album blends these natural sounds with meditative Eastern music resulting in an aesthetic masterpiece. Like his first album, Deuter produced, engineered and played every instrument: sitar, tablas, flute, congas, electronics, guitar and bass. This album goes well with Popol Vuh's ethnic/meditative works like 'In Den Garten Pharoa' and 'Aguirre'. Although not for everyone, this album will appeal to those folks who are into the ethnic and meditative qualities of Krautrock. It is an important document due to the fact that it is the first truly New Age recording. The songs flow into each other creating a seamless flow of meditative and reflective music. [4/5 Doug]

Overview:

At this point in his career, Deuter's sound had completely lost the avant garde aspects which helped to solidify his first albums 'D' and 'Aum' as true krautrock spectacles. 'Haleakala' is dedicated to his master Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, a Jainist Indian religious cult leader who combined elements from Hinduism, Jainism, Zen Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, and ancient Greek philosophy. This album is a new age album, but one which deserves respect for the music is a direct result of Deuter's religious journey within himself. 'Haleakala' features five spiritual tracks complete with eastern string and wind instruments, guitar and an instrument which sounds like an organ. The standout track is the 11-minute 'Haleakala Mystery' which I'm sure will delight many fans with its eerie In Den Garten Pharoa-like Popol Vuh tendency. The track consists of multi-layered drones which slowly change pitch and metamorphasize into incredibly piercing walls of sound. This track literally put me in a sleeplike trance where I was asleep but still conscious of the passing time and my surrounding environment. The rest of the album would be best suited as muzak for a trendy third-world artifact peddler at the mega mall nearest you. If you are feeling adventurous give this album a try, it might be better than you would expect. [3/5 Doug]
