Lightshine was formed in 1974 in Emmerich/Lower Rhein by Wolfgang, Ulli, Joe, and Egon.. They played progressive rock like many bands used to play in the seventies, however they broadened progressive rock with lots of new ideas. After gigging, they recorded their first album. After recording the album they had contractual negotiations with Sky Records and Phonogram which were uneventful, and as a result they released Feeling in 1976 as a private issue with 500 copies. The album sold well which promted them to make another 500 copies! Lightshine were quickly becoming well known in the Lower Rhein area where they playedat festivals and as support act for other groups such as Holderlin, Jane, Colosseum II, and the Scorpions. The group disbanded in 1977 after failing to break through commercially and internal disagreements tore them apart. As a note of interest, some tracks on this album have been used to supply the background for TV broadcasts!

Overview:

Lightshine released this, their only album, in 1976 as a private release after they had trouble securing a contract with a major company. The five tracks on this album are all well composed and feature what I believe to be good musicians. This album combines a unique take on progressive rock combined with a somewhat Grobschnittian humor. This humor is evident first in 'Sword In The Sky' which begins with some great prog-guitar that suddenly stops so that the group as a whole can give a blood-curdled "Ah". Again, the group shows their fancy for the weird with the deranged laughter and vocals from the Kings POV in 'King And Queen'. Personally, I feel this track would be the best track on the album (BY FAR!) if it didn't include the said vocals. Other strong tracks are on the album are 'Feeling' and probably the best cut 'Nightmare', a soft ballad with synthesizer and acoustic guitar, which features a very distinct accent and a cute misinterpretation of English. The only track which I am not a fan of is 'Lory' which does have a great bass line, but overall sounds a bit too Anglo for my tastes. All vocals are in English and are pretty good. It is a shame that these guys didn't get a chance to make another album, for they had a great guitar and synth sound which would have probably got even better with time. [3/5 Doug]
