Overview:

One of the first albums released on Ohr records, 'Mandalas' ranks with the Kluster LP's as one of the most challenging krautrock albums. The music is very abstract, improvised and full of Eastern influence. I am sure there are folks out there who repeatedly listen to the album on its musical merit, but I generally reserve my listening for those times when a friend dares ask me to let them listen to something different and unusual. A general description of the music is difficult to pin down due to the abstract nature of the compositions. The four tracks are free compositions which flow forth naturally from the demented brains of the four musicians responsible. Devoid of emotion and meaning, the tracks rely heavily on Eastern elements and the sound can be described as an infantile ethnic rock fusion. My favorite track, 'Plasma' features everything from screeching violins to moaning cellos, spastic flute tooting, out of key piano noodling, and a plethora of exotic percussion instruments. Those of you into abstract music of a true alternative nature as well as fans of krautrock in its weirdest and purest form should find this album to be a treat. If you are easily frightened by challenging music then you might want to pass this album by. Thrill seekers are encouraged to give it a spin! [4/5 Doug]
