Overview:

Sadly, My Solid Ground recorded and released just one album for Bacillus back in 1971 before drifting into obscurity. Their sole self-titled album is quite possibly the heaviest album in the krautrock genre. The cover is a drawing containing numerous pink naked pigs (genitalia and all!) supporting the letters in the bands name. The album kicks off with the legendary thirteen-minute Pink Floyd inspired track 'Dirty Yellow Mist' which surpasses all other 'imitations' by a long shot. This apocalyptic track is certainly one of the top space-rock songs in the kraut genre, perhaps even the best! Based around a single, heavy monotonous guitar riff, the track features intergalactic organ lines, thunderous tom-toms, celestial choruses, and acid-drenched reverb vocals which predate GAA's 'Uranus'. The only other track which recalls Floyd is 'Melancholie', a romantic instrumental dominated by piano. Having conquered the space rock sound, the rest of the album is focused on blending together the Stooges and Sabbath into an unholy mixture of heaviness. The remaining six tracks are raw rock songs which at times border on punk; the standouts include 'Flash Part IV', 'That's You', and 'The Executioner'. 'Flash' and 'That's You' are straight up garage punk songs complete with heavy riffs, amateurish soloing, loud vocals, and in the case of the latter track, the most ferocious riff of the genre which sounds as if the group travelled forward in time to 1977! The most original track on the album is 'The Executioner'. This track starts off with a hypnotic mumbled vocal section for a few bars before a thunderous guitar and keyboard riff unexpectedly cuts in like an executioners axe and assaults the listeners ears. It should be noted that the Second Battle CD reissue contains 7 bonus tracks accounting for nearly 45-minutes of additional music. Way to go guys! [4/5 Doug]
