Overview:

Keyboardist and founding member of Novalis, Lutz Rahn recorded and released his only solo album in 1978. The aptly titled 'Solo Trip' contains eight short instrumental tracks of varying degree totalling just over 29 minutes. The atmospheric music is dominated by a keyboard based symphonic electronic sound, at times sounding rather romantic and upbeat. As a whole, the album is a mixture of atmospheric soundtracks and a light hearted blend of 1980's adult pop and muzak; side one sounds a bit more atmospheric and deliberate while side 2 is more energetic and uplifting. The album has three standout tracks: 'Yeti' 'Galaxy Taxi' and 'Ausklang'. Both 'Yeti' and 'Galaxy Taxi' sound as if they were recorded with the intent of being film scores. 'Yeti' has a mysterious sinister edge to it while 'Galaxy Taxi' has a feeling of triumph or remembrance. 'Ausklang' stands out due to its romantic classical tendencies, gentle lead lines, and lush mellotron. The low point, 'Dracula's Kuss', adds a slight dance element courtesy the disco drumming of Helge Tillmann and Rahn's own cheesy electric piano lead. As far as I know, this release is only available on vinyl LP, so tracking a down a copy might be daunting. It is worth noting that the album was produced by the legendary Achim Reichel and engineered by Thomas Kuckuck. [2/5 Doug]
