Overview:

Those of you who love the sweet sound of Neu! '75 should get a kick out of Michael Rother's debut solo-LP 'Flammende Herzen'. Rother builds on the minimalist ideas which he and Klaus Dinger perfected, creating a unique sound similar, yet more subdued to that of his former band. Entirely instrumental, the music relies heavily on melodic rhythm guitar, lush synthesizers, soaring lead guitars and steady motoric percussion by Jaki Liebzeit of Can. As mentioned, many of the tracks have that sweet Neu! sound similar to the classic track 'Isi'. The third track, 'Karussell', sounds so similar that it could almost pass for 'Isi'. As far as a standout tracks goes, each track is very strong and it will come down to the personal tastes of the listener. 'Feuerland', manages to stand out as a dark track with its droning bass, steady percussion, atmospheric synthesizer, and harmonic guitar notes. 'Zeni' is a contemplative track featuring outstanding tom-tom percussion and evocative lead guitar. Engineered by Konrad Plank, the music sounds fresher than ever. Musically, 'Flammende Herzen' is a natural progression from 'Neu! '75'. The lush production values provides further proof that all 80's music owes a debt of gratitude towards Rother, Plank and their peers. [5/5 Doug]
