Overview:

Next to Amon Duul, Siloah is probably the most well known commune-turned-band. Their self-titled debut album, also known as 'Sauredler' is a mixture of ethnic, psychedelic, and folk. Some parallels can be drawn with the marijuana haze of 'Paradieswarts Duul' by Amon Duul and the wilder aspects of 'Crawling to Lhasa' by Kalacakra. You can probably tell by looking at the song titles that drugs were a big influence on the band, especially in the lyrics of 'Krishna's Golden Dope Show' which has a catchy chorus that asks the question "where are these shores where I can by all the dope I want". Musically, the most attractive tracks on the album are 'Krishna's Golden Dope Show' and 'Road To Laramy', both of which display a tendency for slower folkier elements as evidenced by the rambling guitar and percussion. 'Acid Eagle' is a short repetitive track containing an endless guitar and percussion loop along with the repetitive vocals "the acid eagle is spreading his wings". 'Aluminum Wind' is an extended and nonstop free-for-all of discordant underground folk guitar strumming, percussion, flute and sporadic vocals. Overall, the musicianship on this album, though better than Amon Duul, is still rather amateur; those of you who find this distracting might want to give the album a pass. As a bonus, the CD contains two Siloah additional tracks bringing the total time of the disc above 46 minutes. [3/5 Doug]
