DIOCESE OF NATAL
Cathedral: St Saviour’s, Pietermaritzburg.
Arms as in use from about 1893 to 1952. The blazon reads:
Azure a saltire and in chief a mullet of six points, Argent.
Brownell[1] writes: “In the earlier version of theses arms borne during the episcopacy of John Colenso, the star was an estoile, i e with wavy rays and it was gold, not silver.
“The silver six-pointed star was first illustrated in Crockford’s Clerical Directory of 1896, which refers to the Diocese as MARITZBURG (or NATAL). By 1898, Crockford’s had amended its heading to NATAL (formerly MARITZBURG). These arms provided the basis for a grant by the College of Arms in 1952, in which the ‘St Andrew’s Cross’ is charged with a red pastoral staff and spear in saltire.”
Bishops:
Following the deaths of Bishop Colenso (1883) and Bishop Macrorie (1893), A H Baynes was appointed to the See of Natal.
He was succeeded by F S Baines (1901), L N Fisher (1928) and T G V Inman (1951), who remained in office until 1974 (more than two decades after the diocese received a grant from the College of Arms).
Afrikaanse blasoen:
Die wapen mag soos volg geblasoeneer word:
In blou ’n skuinskruis en in die skildhoof ’n sespuntige ster van silwer.
