Asante Drums
Focussed on Kumasi the Asante capital, in West Africa is a network of
village craft workshops where traditional materials are used by local craftsmen to
carefully and painstakingly make Asante drums including the above
traditional form on display in the British Museum.
Local timber and labour is used to make the smooth base of the drum. Which is decorated with
carved symbols.
The skin of the drum is often made from goats' hide but cows' skin can also
be used. The head of the drum may optionally be decorated with traditional
cloth.
The finished masterpiece is a handsome high
quality handcrafted drum made using local materials and supporting local people
and their traditional skills.
