#4: Nice Cheese Site

It's pretty hard to believe how long I've gone without even updating my Whine List...and, come to think of it, I'm not really updating any part of my site all that much either...which totally sucks!

I remember that when I started, this site was only an experiment...an attempt at seeing if I had the skills necessary to make an actual website and maintain it. It was kind of a mixture of a lot of ideas that I'd had in my head for a long time. A lot of the ideas I'd started with were subsequently rejected, of course...like the video game section. Even still, there are new ideas that I'm keeping in my head...and I still don't really know what I'll do with them.

This website, like so many things in life, is a work in progress. Recently, a thought occured to me about how useless META tags are, simply because of how they're so often abused by a lot of web-designing people...so...I've started to make webpages without them...like this page, for example.

So...well...in reality, I'm taking computer classes at a technical college where I live. I've taken one class in HTML and that one class taught me enough to begin work on what you see before you now. Even still, I have a lot of work to do and a long way to go before I'm really good at what I'm doing here.

Then, there's the cheese site. That site exists for one reason. Quite simply, it was my final project in that HTML class. After a lot of worrying and things of that nature, I started work on the site and I guess I rather like what I've come up with...even if the site's graphics leave something to be desired. My teacher, however, was rather impressed by my work on that site, it seems...and started showing the URL to the people she works for...and, of course, I started showing the URL to people as well...which is why I'm mentioning it here.

The site basically showcases a fictional company called Cheese Industries, which is only now beginning to expand its business onto the Web. What makes Cheese Industries somewhat remarkable is the fact that they make things out of cheese...but for the most part, these are not things that can be eaten. The idea strikes me as being rather funny...and while humor wasn't required in the assignment...honestly, it never hurts, does it? Perhaps this site needs more comedy. I'm not really sure.

Anyway...all of this leads me to be considering a career in Web design. I still don't really know what would be required of me if I did...or what kind of qualifications a web designer would need to have...but designing websites seems to be something I can do and get paid for, since relatively few people actually know how to do any HTML at all.

Meanwhile, I myself am still learning. There is a lot that I don't really know or understand...and at one point, I'd like to be able to really make use of cascading style sheets. Silent Waters itself will find itself being updated and changed as I see fit...and...what I hope is that it will somehow end up becoming something truly meaningful.
