40 Years in a Heartbeat 5
"Ginger, I am so happy for you & Jeff. It just seems like yesterday that I help fix your wedding dress."
Ginger smiled & hugged Gina. "You know who I was thinking about the other day, Gina? Caroline!"

"Why you think about Caroline after all these years?" Ginger thought she had better explain quickly, "Well, all during the war, I was all set to marry Charlie. I even went to meet his train in my wedding gown, for goodness sake." Gina couldn't help from laughing, that sounded just like the Ginger she had come to know & love over the years. "I was just thinking that as much as I always hated that tramp, I really should be grateful to her. You should too, if you come to think of it."

"I understand, perfectly, if I no meet Caroline on the train, I would no meet Charlie & eventually become his wife."

"Exactly! Of course, I am still angry about her trying to land Jeff, but she got everything she deserved."

"Oh Ginger, I think that Caroline was just unhappy, she never knew what real love was."

"Unless you can count the love of money," joined in Charlie, catching the tail end of their conversation.

"I still felt sorry for her, she died all alone"

"& penniless, Gina, which is exactly what she deserved after what she put everyone through." Ginger nodded in agreement with Charlie.

Linda had snuck into the kitchen & started to put the remaining food into the refrigerator. She loved her family, but seeing them all together just made her miss Phil & Becky even more. Her daughter had managed to distance herself from everyone, especially Linda. "Oh, Mother, at what point did it all begin to fall apart for me?" She had to laugh at herself, here she was hiding out in the kitchen of what should be an extremely happy occasion talking to her dead mother about her murdered husband & estranged daughter. "I could be a plotline for a soap opera!" Linda's mood began to lighten, as she rejoined the party.
