40 Years in a Heartbeat 7
After having dinner at Jeff & Ginger's with the entire family, Linda was looking forward to spending the evening getting reacquainted with her daughter. She will never figure out why she can never say no to Ginger. Of course, Steve & his family were heading back to Chicago tomorrow morning, so there was no other opportunity to have the whole family together. Linda was standing in the kitchen with her blue terry cloth robe on, fixing a pot of coffee when Becky came in.

"My, we are more alike than I ever thought," chuckled Becky.

Noticing that they had on the exact same robe made Linda smile. "I hope you aren't saying that is a bad thing!"

Becky noticed that although her mother's tone was light her eyes told a different story. "Of course not, Mother, I just always thought I was more like Grammy. There are worse things in life than to be a perfect blend of the two strongest women I know!"

Linda still had no idea what brought Rebecca back to River Run, but she knew better than to push. She would find out sooner or later, she was just glad to have her daughter near. Becky had explained to her mother on the way back home that she wanted to talk to her about her father's death, if Linda was up for the conversation.

After getting cozy on the couch, Linda started filling in the blanks for Becky. Linda always suspected that she might be unclear on some things, after all her daughter was away at college when her father was murdered. "In 1949, Ginger, Judy & I started working together to uncover the Heritage Village scandal & clear Al Kahn name from being labeled a communist. Well the Sloan's were very crafty & left virtually no paper trail. So, we gave up the cause after a few years. It wasn't until Charlie Hailey had his accident in 1956 & acquired 60% of Sloan industries that it all began to unravel for Michael & Ruth Sloan. Charlie, now being the controlling partner in Sloan Industries, moved into Mike's old office. While moving the furniture around to suit his tastes, not to mention fit in a nice new chair, a present from Charlie's wife Gina, an old dusty file was underneath the file cabinet. Charlie immediately handed the folder over to me, asking if it would help with that Heritage Village project I was working on years ago. I gave Charlie the biggest hug that I could've, he had managed to find all the evidence we could've ever hoped for! I printed up the biggest story of my entire career. It brought my family a lot of happiness, Al's name was cleared. But, it was the end of the safety net the surrounded Ruth Sloan. They lost all respectability in this town. The only reason Sloan Industries continues to run is because of Charlie's good name." Linda took a drink of her coffee, let Becky take a minute to let it all soak in. "The Sloan's left River Run, no one saw or heard from them for 15 years. There were rumors, of course, but no one knows where they went or why. Then all of the sudden they reappeared. Acting as though nothing ever happened, as if time hadn't passed. One night, your father was home waiting for your usual Sunday evening call from school, when he received a threatening call, saying that I was going to finally pay for the hell I have caused people. I was working late at the paper, with my phone off the hook, like I always did when facing a deadline. Your father came down to the paper to warn me. Ruth Sloan shot your father, while he was trying to protect me."..
