June 1964

It was a hot summer day in River Run, Ohio.  Tommy Metcalf is lying in the grass on the front lawn.  His cuffed jeans, one size too big, were grass stained, which matched nicely with the Indians jersey, dingy from a hard day at play.  If you didn't know Tommy, you would think he always wore the same clothes.  But after exhausting herself trying to get him to wear something different, Ginger went out & purchased several pairs of  his oversized jeans he insisted on wearing & seven identical Indians jerseys.

Hank approached his young nephew, "Hey Lil' Slugger, you want to go with me & Steve to Ruperts & then to see the new John Wayne movie 'Circus World'?"

"No thanks, Uncle Hank, I am just waiting for Daddy he promised to hit me a few."

"OK, Lil' Slugger, have a good time."

Steve came bounding down the front steps, Hank could see Ginger at the front door.  "We could be kind of late Ginger, do you care I he just sleeps over at my house?"

Ginger walked onto the front porch, "Not at all Hank, you guys have fun."

Steven & Hank both waved bye to Ginger.  Hank couldn't help being a bit envious of his little brother's fine family.  He thought back to how everyone reacted when they heard that Jeff & Ginger were even dating each other, "Boy we all missed the mark on that one," Hank mumbled to himself with a chuckle.

"What did you say Uncle Hank?"  Steven Henry looked at his uncle with great respect & admiration, for some reason these two shared a bond that no one could explain.

"Nothing, Steve, now why don't you tell me about this girl who likes you?"

Steve's face turned a deep crimson, "It is Susie's weirdo friend, Sallie Sanderson, she keeps writing me stupid poems with hearts drawn all over the paper."

"Why is she weird?  Sallie is a cute girl."

"She's cute alright, till she starts talking.  She talks so fast, Uncle Hank, like everything is life or death."

Hank couldn't help laughing, "Did I ever tell you about the crush my little sister's best friend had on me?."
