Tommy 11
Sam slammed the receiver down & started shaking so uncontrollably that she didn't even hear the phone ring a few minutes later when Tommy called back with his customary I really love you call.  She had been fortunate that when she returned from Florida, Derrick was gone for 2 weeks for a golf tournament.  Only
Sam knew what kind of person Derrick McKinley really was, to the outside world he was golf's golden boy, perfect in almost every way from his all American good looks to his ability to charm almost anyone.  But one night after losing a golf tournament & putting on his 'good sport' face to the press, Sam told him that he shouldn't feel bad for doing his best.  He responded by hitting her in the cheek with the back of his hand.  Of course there were flowers, dozens & dozens, the next day with the standard 'I will never ever touch you again.  Please forgive me!' card.  Sam loved Derrick & he was generally so gentle, so she forgave him.  Pretty soon with every loss in golf came flair up which resulted in Derrick taking it out on Sam, most of the time emotionally but sometimes physically.  The last time was 2 months ago; Derrick came home from winning a big tournament that ended up landing him a huge endorsement contract.  Sam woke up to find Derrick standing in her bedroom; drunk telling her that he wanted to celebrate.  Sam had just gotten over the flu & was still exhausted, she told him congratulations but she was too sick to party.  He lunged at her, sitting on top of her chest with his hands around her throat he was screaming at her that it was no thanks to her that he won or accomplished anything, eventually she passed out.  She woke up to Casey sitting on the floor holding her in his arms crying.  Casey knew his sister was feeling poorly but wanted to say goodbye to her before he caught his flight for spring training.  The door was open to Sam's apartment so he walked in only to find Derrick on top of her.  He pulled Derrick off of Sam.  Derrick was so afraid of Casey coming after him that he took off.  Sam hadn't seen him since.

A big thunderous knock brought Sam out of her trip down memory lane.
