Tommy 13 |
The thunderous pound at the door became more & more demanding, "Open the door, Samantha, I know you are there!! I just want to talk to you about what happened." Derrick continued to pound at the door. Derrick's voice sounded like he was sorry. "Please, Sam, it will never happen again, I promise!" Sam opened the door as far as the heavy duty chain would allow her to. "Derrick, I know all about your promises. I also know that if Casey hadn't happened by the last time you would have killed me. I am moving on with my life" "With Tommy? Who the HELL IS TOMMY!?" Derrick's begging, pleading soft voice was replaced with a harsh menacing tone. The sad, little boy look on his face was soon transformed into a cruel snarl. Sam grabbed her telephone, "It doesn't matter, Derrick. We are over! If you do not leave, I will call the police!" Sam could see through the cracked door that Derrick was getting more & more agitated, "Samantha, you belong to me & I will kill you before I let you be with someone else. Do you hear me, I will kill you!" Derrick stormed off leaving Sam terrified. She quickly dialed the phone to call her editor, he had said something about wanting her to go to Florida to cover the spring training of the Indians & to profile the possible rookies. They would have a definite team roster next week. The buzz about Jeff Metcalf's son possibly playing for the Indians was big news in these parts. Plus the paper wanted her to get an interview with the new Indians pitcher, Shawn Gigler. She was looking forward to that interview because over the last 2 years, Casey talked about his good friend often & she knew he was a super nice guy. She was going to surprise Tommy with the news but wanted to get a definite yes first. Bill, her editor, said it was a definite go, & she could leave the day after tomorrow. Relief washed over Sam's body, she wanted to get as far away from Toledo & Derrick McKinley as possible. |
