Tommy 25
Tommy had come home to River Run, spending the week playing catch with his dad & cooking with his mom.  He answered all her questions about Sam.  Even telling her that she would finally be able to meet Sam when they went to his game next week.  Ginger asked Tommy if he was nervous about his first major league game.  He said that Jeff told him not to think about it or he'd drive himself crazy.  His dad also told him that when he did get nervous he would think about Ginger & that always calmed him down.  Tommy relayed that to his mother & told her he was going to think about his beautiful Samantha.

Tommy left that morning to go to Cleveland for practice.  He was staying with his friend, Casey Bradshaw until the game the next day.  Ginger was getting more & more suspicious of Jeff's actions but try as she might she couldn't find out what he was up to.  After the mysterious call to Judy she partially overheard when she came in with the groceries a week or so ago, there were no more strange phone calls.  Ginger started thinking she was paranoid until she walked in the door after a quick trip to Brandstaetters & Mr. Williams, Steve & Jane's old landlord, called leaving a message for Jeff about him renting their house.  Ginger knew if she had any hope of finding out what her husband was up to she needed to save the message on the new answering machine that Susan got them for their anniversary & act like she never heard it.  When Jeff came home from taking Tommy to the train he asked her if she checked for messages.

Ginger was in the kitchen mixing together a meatloaf for that night's dinner, "Sorry, dear, I can't quit get used to the idea that people can call while we aren't home & leave us a message.  It slipped my mind, honey.  Could you go look?"  Ginger watched as Jeff slinked off to the livingroom to listen to the recording.

"Mr. Metcalf, this is Frank Williams.  I just wanted to let you know that the house will be ready for occupancy today as  you requested.  And my wife left the livingroom furniture that your son left behind just like you asked."  The voice on the answering machine said.

Good Lord, thought Jeff.  What if Ginger had heard that.  I told Mr. Williams that I would be in touch with him.  Jeff erased the message.

Ginger called from the other room.  "Did anyone call, sweetie?" Her voice was dripping with saccharin.  & if Jeff wasn't so preoccupied with keeping the secret, he would know that Ginger was suspicious.

"It was no one," Jeff used a mental reservation.  He was thinking it was no one for you.  Thank Goodness Sam was getting here this afternoon.  He was going to help her unload the U-Haul she was renting & get her settled.  Judy was going to meet them at the house at noon.  Thankfully Ginger was going with Linda, Anne & Emma to take their niece Hailey to buy a new dress for her 9th birthday.

Ginger eyed her husband suspiciously. What are you up to, Jeff Metcalf! Ginger thought.
