Tommy 3 |
Tommy placed coins into the payphone right outside the locker room. After ringing 3 times, a familiar voice picked up, "Hello". "How is my favorite lady doing today?" Tommy asked. Ginger perked up, "Tommy! How is everything going? Jeff!! Tommy is on the telephone! Your dad has been wanting to call you for days but I told him that you would call whenever you had the time. Are you eating ok? Have you made any new friends?" Tommy couldn't help but smile, that was typical of his mother to ask him a bunch of questions but not pause long enough between them for you to actually answer her. "Tommy? Are you ok? You haven't said a word." Ginger motioned for Jeff to come to the phone. "Would you like to talk to your dad?" "Mom, everything is going fine, I had a few great hits today. I am eating just fine, you know that is something you don't have to worry about, I have dad's stomach. I have met a few great guys but I am not 11 and away at camp. I would love to talk to dad, but I want to talk to you for a bit longer first, if that is ok with you." Tommy knew if he bothered to pause between answers, he may never get to finish answering. "How is everything at home? Have you heard from Steve & Jane? How is baby Stephanie? & Suz?" Thinking about her first granddaughter made Ginger want to gush, "She is getting bigger, everyday. Steve & Jane are getting settled in Chicago, they are coming back this weekend to get Stephie. We are going to be so sad to see her go. You were the last baby we had in this house." Ginger started to cry thinking about her baby all grown up. "Mo..MOM! It's ok, let me talk to Dad & Please don't cry" Jeff took the receiver from Ginger's hand as she dried her tears with the hanky he offered her. "Hey Son, how is Spring Training?" "I got some good hits today & so far I haven't been cut. Is Mom going to be ok? I don't remember her ever being so emotional." Tommy spotted a beautiful girl waiting outside the locker room door. She had on a pair of cut offs & an old Indians jersey with his Dad's name & number on the back. Her dark hair was in a ponytail sticking out the back of an Indians ball cap. ".....loves having Little Stephie around....." Jeff barely noticed that Tommy lost interest in the conversation. "Dad, I am going to have to call you back. I have just spotted the girl of my dreams!" Tommy hung up without a response from his dad. Jeff pulled the receiver away from his ear with the biggest smile on his face. "Jeff? What is the matter? Why did you just stop talking to Tommy?" Ginger was curious as to why the conversation ended when Jeff was midsentence. "Tom had to go, he is in Love!" Jeff chuckled. Ginger just shook her head, "AGAIN?!" |
