Cuidados generales - General care


El Agua en el jardin me parece realmente fascinante, tanto por las plantas que crecen en ella, como por los peces...Siempre me gusto la jardineria, pero hasta hace dos años no habia descubierto el "agua"...me parecia muy complicado todo lo que leia, filtros,bombas, aireadores...
Quiero contarles que hacer un estanque "casero" puede ser simple, por ahi para criar peces a gran escala hacen falta elementos mas elaborados, pero tambien un sencillo "estanque para principiantes"  puede funcionar muy bien. (los nuestros no tienen filtros ni bombas, solo plantas oxigenadoras y un poco de agua que se renueva cada dia, ya que los dos tienen filtraciones y pierden un poco de agua).Al principio el agua estaba turbia, pero despues de algunas semanas se empezo a crear un habitat natural con varias especies tanto vegetales como animales, que se ve que hacen que el agua no se pudra y se mantenga en buen estado. Solo despues de las lluvias se enturbia un poco, pero despues vuelve a la normalidad. Los peces viven perfectamente, se han reproducido, y estan muy saludables...Creeria que el secreto debe ser que haya muchas plantas oxigenadoras (mas de la mitad del estanque chico esta cubierto por Elodea)...
Water in the garden seems to me something fascinating, because the plants that grow in it and the fish too...I have always liked gardening, but I haven't discover water till two years ago...it seems too complicated all what I have read about it, filters,air pumps, etc...
I want to tell you that making a "home-pond" is rather simple...I don't mean that all that (filters,etc) are not useful, but I believe it is possible to make a "beginners-pond" without them...(our ponds don't have any filters, nor water pumps...only oxigenating plants and some fresh water each day -because both,the big and the little pond have some filtrations and loose water-,perhaps this is a good thing...)
At the beginning, water was turbid, but after some weeks it began to create a natural habitat with many animal and plant's species...this seems to maintain well the water and don't let it decay...
Only after the rains it looks turbid, but then it returns to normality...Fish live o.k., they have reproduced themselves and are very healthy...I believe that perhaps the secret is that more than half the the pond is covered with the oxygenating plant Elodea.

Tambien me parece importante no agregar peces que puedan traer enfermedades...he visto en los negocios que venden peces , muchos de ellos en mal estado (también he comprado!)...y me parece peligroso mezclarlos con los propios cuando uno logro tener una "comunidad sana"...En invierno no les doy comida, y en primavera,verano y otoño solo un poquito de comida para peces (para verlos comer, mas que nada), eso si, siempre les tiro algunas lombrices, que les encantan y lei que favorece las aptitudes reproductivas. (El tema comida se ve que no es facil, al principio les daba de comer una vez por dia, pero tambien los chicos iban y los alimentaban...resultado: algunos muertos, con el vientre hinchado...no se con seguridad si fue la comida, pero cuando deje de darles de comer no tuve mas problemas...). Otra cosa que lei que es importante es no sobrepoblar el estanque...ya que con no muchos peces estos se arreglan muy bien comiendo bichitos y plantas que encuentran en su habitat natural...
Una dato a tener en cuenta es la relacion entre la variedad de pez que uno elige y el tamaño del estanque... Basicamente, me quedo la idea de que las carpas son para lugares grandes y los Goldfish pueden desarrollarse bien en lugares mas pequeños...(¡no MUY pequeños!)


Also I find important not to add fish that can carry illness...I have seen (and I have bought!) fishes with not good health in the fish-stores and seems to be dangerous to mix them with your own, specially if you have already succeed in making a "healthy community"...In Winter I don't feed the fish, and in Spring,Summer and Autumn I give them very little of fish food (to see them eating)...Earthworms are the food they prefer, each time I go next to the pond, I search for one or two earthworms and throw them to the fish...they love them...and I have read that they are good for the reproductive activity...
Feeding seems to be a difficult topic...when we have just made the pond, we feed them once a day (but afterward kids went again and again with more food to see the fish eating)...The result: some dead fish... I'm not completely sure that the problem was the excess of food, but when I took the food out, fish returned to feel well...
Another thing I have read is that it's important not to overcrowd the pond...with not too many fish, they are fine eating insects and plants that they found in their natural habitat...
One datum to remember too is the relation between the variety of the fish that we choose and the size of the pond. Basically, I kept the idea that the Carps are for big places and Goldfish can develop well in smaller spaces...(Not TOO small!) 

 

Goldfish

Todos los peces del estanque chico son Goldfish de distintas variedades...tambien han nacido algunas crias hijos de los "pobladores" del estanque...pero no sabría decir de quien es hijo cada cual...Hay algunos de cola simple y otros de cola doble, algunos de color naranja, o combinaciones de naranja con blanco, tambien otros rojizos con negro y varios marrones...Algunos de estos han cambiado de color en el primer año...pero hay otros que todavia no pasa nada...
All the fish from the little pond are Goldfish from different varietys ...also they have born a lot of fry...but I'don't know who are the parents...There are some fry with double-tail and some with only one...(the anal fins double or simple)...Colours: orange, orange and white, also some red and black and many brown-black ones...Some of this had changed their brown into orange...but there are some that are still brown-balck and they are more than one year old...

Shubunkins: Son mis preferidos. Muy rusticos, nadan rapido (mas dificiles de atrapar para los pajaros), lindos colores y muy inteligentes (por lo menos son los mas astutos para comer, vienen enseguida, y si uno los quiere agarrar parece que leyeran el pensamiento y huyen a toda velocidad...).Hay tres shubunkins grandes, uno blanco (foto), uno mas azulado y uno overo (manchas negras,azules y rojas).
I lke very much the Shubunkins...They are very rustic , they swim very fast (more difficult for the birds to catch them), beautiful and very intelligents (at least they are very astute to eat, they come quickly, and if you want to trap them , they seem to read your mind and they quickly run away...) There are three big shubunkins, one of them White (photo), one with blue touches, and one with black,blue and red...

Cometa:  Tengo uno solo (foto) de un año de edad. Por ahora tiene caracteristicas parecidas a los Shubunkins, nada muy rapido, ha aguantado bien el invierno y tiene un color rojo con blanco muy intenso.
I have only one Comet (picture) of one year old. By this time, it has similar qualities than the shubunkins, he has speed, has resisted the Winter well and he has a very intense colour: Red and white.

 

   

Telescopicos: Aparentemente son bastante delicados (de dos que compramos, se murio uno). Tambien un primo mio que tiene peces ha tenido mala experiencia con ellos...al principio estaban bien, pero despues se le iban muriendo...Son muy lentos para nadar, tardan en encontrar la comida...aparentemente ven mal, a pesar de tener dos grandes ojos saltones...
They seem to be very delicate ("not resistant" is what I want to say)...We bought two, and one died...Also a cousin of mine that has a very nice pond had bad experiences with them...first all went all right, but afterward they began to die...They are too slow to swim, they take long to find their food...don't see well...although they have two big eyes...

Goldfish comunes: Tambien las variedades con vistosas colas y aletas me parecen poco rusticas... viven... pero nadan muy despacio y no parecen muy naturales...Hay tres de ellos en el estanque...los tres de color naranja...
Common Goldfish: Also the varietys with "showy fins" seem not to be rustic at all...they live...but with slow swimming and don't look very natural...There are three of them in the pond...the three are orange coloured...

Crias - Fry (Baby-fish)
En esta foto aparece una de las crias aparentemente de shubunkin...es blanca con manchas naranjas y negras...Abajo de ella se ve una cria con cola doble...esta cria era totalmente marron, y de a poco se fue poniendo naranja...ahora solo le queda la cola oscura...
Abajo de la foto, casi no se ve, hay una cria de las marrones...esta todavia no ha mostrado ningun indicio de cambiar de color...
In this picture there is one of the "nearly sure shubunkin baby fish"...it is white with orange and a little of black...Under this one, is one "double-tail fry"...this fish was completely brown, and gradually it has turned orange...now the only thing is still lack of colour is the tail...(follow the white arrow in the picture).
In the low part of the picture is a brown-black fry (difficult to see it!)...this one has not shown yet any sign of changing colours ...

 

En las dos fotos vemos a otra de las crias que está cambiando de color...La otra cria parece shubunkin de color rojo con negro...
In this two pictures we see another fish changing colour...(¿Comet may be?) The other fish is like the shubunkins, and he is red and black...

Una ultima cosa, y quizas la que me parece mas importante en todo lo que sean elementos de la naturaleza, tanto plantas, como peces, perros o lo que uno quiera criar: Buscar individuos y especies fuertes, resistentes, por ahi no tan atractivos en sus colores o formas, pero que se adapten bien al medio ambiente que uno tenga...Tambien tienen generalmente la virtud de no "desentonar" con el paisaje...usualmente tienen un aspecto mucho mas natural...dan poco trabajo y son muy nobles.


One last thing, and perhaps the most important for me in all nature elements: plants,fish, dogs and whatever you want to breed: Searching for strong and resistant individuals and species, perhaps not too showy in their colours and forms, but individuals that addapt well to the enviroment you can offer them...Also usually they have the virtue of "not be out of tune" with the landscape...they generally have a more natural look than the others...they don't need a lot of work to care well of them ...and are very noble.
