| I heard my Mother declare, My Dad is coming home today, Oh I cannot wait to see, My Dad at home to stay, I heard my Mother state , The blue shirt is fine, My Dad likes that shirt, It is his favorite and mine. I heard my Mother whisper something, So that I could not hear, I bet it is a surprise for me, My Dad is such a dear, Then I heard my Mother sobbing And I wondered why, If my Dad is coming home today, Why would that make her cry? I heard my Mother hang up the phone, The moments seemed so long Until she came to hold me close, I knew something was wrong. I heard my Mother weeping, As she told me Dad gave his life, To save another person In that terrible September strife Dad is home in Heaven God has a new angel now, To kneel before Him, In a sacred bow, I heard my Mother cry, When to their comrade The firemen said final farewells, To a Hero, a Husband, a Friend, a Dad.
