The Ups and Downs of Being a Female Computer Geek
I AM SMART!!!

I had a great day today!

I figured out how to fix a problem we have had with Offline File Synchronization that had eluded the rest of my office, pretty much since before I started working here.

It is our common practice to redirect a user's My Documents folder to their N:\ Drive (the folder they have on the server) and then set up Offline File Synchronization to make a local copy of those files onto their computer so that if they become disconnected from the network they can still work on their files and save them and the system will Synchronize the files when they are on the network again.  It is a useful tool, especially for those people who have Laptops.

The one problem is, that once you set up this type of Syncrhonization using a Redirected folder to a network source, the "Make Available Offline" option greyes itself out and we were unable to TURN OFF the feature.

My problem, which prompted me to do some further investigation, is that one of our users who has a Laptop only as an extra device has 22GB (GigaBytes) of info on his N:\ Drive.  His laptop only has a 30GB Hard Drive...  So this is a REAL problem..  Becuase the local copy of his info filled his drive and I could NOT turn off the feature.

Upon doing some research I figured out that Windows XP AUTOMATICALLY will make any Redirected folder to a network source "available offline" and that is why it greyes out the "Make Available Offline" choice once it is set up.  I did some further research.  It turns out that that there is a Local User Policy that you can set up so it won't automatically make redirected folders available offline thus making the "Make Available Offilne" choice usable again so you can set it NOT to make everything available offline.

So now I can choose which folders are the most important for this user to make available offline instead of it synchronizing his Entire N:\ Drive.  Now we will also be able to TURN OFF Offline File Synchronization for users who leave and/or no longer need it on their systems.

I feel special! Image  It makes me happy that I figured out something so important to our office and could share with the rest of the techs so they will actually use it in their jobs.
