LAGO-PAIVA, Celso. [Notes on the occurrence and distribution of Eudocimus ruber (L., 1758) (Aves, Threskiornithidae) for São Paulo State, Brazil].
Acta Biologica Leopoldensia 16(2):119-124, 1994 (in Portuguese, English Abstract).

      Abstract

The only museum specimen of Eudocimus ruber (Aves, Threskiornithidae) known at present for the São Paulo State (SP), Southeastern Brazil, was collected at the mangroves of the estuarine system of São Vicente, central littoral of the State, on January 1st, 1961, and deposited in the ornithological collection (ESLQ) of the Zoology Department, ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil.
The study of the historical evolution of the local biota and of the environmental alterations may provide guidelines for a management plan for the system.

LAGO-PAIVA, Celso; WILLIS, Edwin O. New occurrences of Melanerpes cactorum (D'Orbigny, 1840) (Aves, Picidae) in Brazilian territory.
          Biotemas 7(1/2):110-115, 1994.

      Abstract
Melanerpes cactorum (d'Orbigny, 1840) (Aves, Picidae) was observed on 24 April 1986 and 27 May 1989 at the extreme south of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, at the same region of the only previous record of the species in Brazil, on 28 Oct. 1958.
The authors suggest that the species has a small but resident population in the central western Brazil.

LAGO-PAIVA, Celso. Cavity nesting by Pitangus sulphuratus (Tyrannidae): adaptation or expression of ancestral behavior?
          Auk 113(4):953-955, 1996.

      Excerpt
“Nest location (exposed or concealed) and structure (cup-shaped or domed) of Tyrannus relatives (12 genera and about 33 species)... are discussed here in relation to the evolution of the nesting behavior in the group.
I list some published [and original] observations in order to support the hypothesis that the habit of nesting in cavities be a primitive character in certain branches of the Tyrannidae, or even in all the family.”
