Spike made his first appearance in the Buffyverse during season two in the episode School Hard. He came onto the scene as one part of a duo labeled the Sid and Nancy of the vampire set. The other part was Drusilla, Spike's sickly and insane paramour. The two were coming home to the Hellmouth to find a cure to Drusilla's physical ailment after she was attacked by a mob in Prague and left nearly dead. And what a mess the two ran into. A Slayer's town, a Slayer's town with their souled sire residing(assuming Angel sired both of them). Said sire the love interest of said Slayer to boot. Needless to say Spike had his hands full what with an ill girlfriend and two demon hunters on his heels. Spike eventually figured out a way to cure Drusilla, the cure of course involved the blood of Angel. To read more about this, visit Spike's Own Sunnyhell. So Drusilla was cured after a bout of Sire torture, but this of course led to an angry Slayer and an angry Slayer is not a good thing. Buffy, the Slayer, came on full throttle with an attack that was meant to put a stop to both Spike and Dru for good. It didn't, but it left Spike bound to a wheel chair for quite a while.

So now the tables were turned and it was Drusilla who took care of Spike. And we can't forget that sire again. Who had managed to lose his soul after a moment of perfect happiness. Angel was ready to re-establish himself as head of the household, taking advantage of Spike's weakened condition and Drusilla's frail mind. Obviously Spike was not happy about this, especially after Angelus began with the googly eyes at Spike's girl. Angelus' oogling of Drusilla id what finally led to an alliance between Spike and his mortal enemy the Slayer. And of course Spike's own fondness for Happy Meals with legs. After Angelus decided to call up the Acathla and unleash hell onto Earth Spike teamed up with the Slayer, both as a means to keep hell away(after all in the demon world vampires are often considered inferior) and to get Drusilla away from Angelus. But Spike's plan did backfire a bit. Sure earth was saved yet again, but Drusilla after having learned of Spike's betrayal left him high and dry for a Chaos demon.

This of caused Spike to wander back to Sunnydale nearly half a year later seeking out revenge for the departure of his princess. He was looking for his sire. And he found him all cozy with the Slayer again. Pissed in more ways than one Spike headed off for the magic shop hoping to curse Angel with leporacy. Instead he overheard a conversation between a certain red headed Scooby member and the shop keeper. Forgetting about his sire completely he went after Willow instead demanding that she perform a love spell so he could get Drusilla back. But before Willow had the chance to attempt the spell Spike encoutered both Buffy and Angel who were on the search for their friends. The very friends Spike had locked away at the factory(besides Willow this also included Xander). The trio met up with some of the Mayor's hired hands and a fight ensued. After his infamous Love's Bitch speech, Spike decided that he didn't need a spell to get Dru back. He was going to do it the old fashioned way, torture her until she loved him again. Aparently this worked, for a while at least, because when Spike showed up yet again in Sunnydale it was mentioned that Drusilla left him for a Fungus demon. When Spike came back to Sunnydale he had with him a former Cordette Harmony, who was turned during graduation.

His first season four appearance was in The Harsh Light of day while on a hunt for the ring of Amarra, a gem that would make it impossible to kill him, not even sunlight or a wooden stake through the heart could stop a vampire who had the ring in his possession. Of course Buffy was having none of that and managed to get the ring away from Spike and send it to Angel in LA, where Spike of course later showed up to reclaim it. Of course he was defeated again and was later seen once more in Sunnydale in the episode Wild at Heart getting zapped away into submission by a military organization that would later be known as the Initiative. The Initiative managed to impant Spike with a behavior modification chip that made it impossible for him to kill humans. This led to a not at all enjoyable(for either side) somewhat alliance between Spike, the Slayer and the Slayerettes.

Background History
Not a lot is known about Spike's past at this time, other than he is around 126 years old. The whole sire issue is also pretty iffy, though it's widely believed that it was Angel, then known as Angelus who made a young William into a vampire merely as amusement for the demanding vampire Drusilla. One thing that we do know is that before Spike was known as well Spike, he was called William the Bloody and that he got the nifty nickname Spike from rail road spikes. He liked to torture his victims with them.
