April 2004

Precipitation averaged above normal over all four sectors of our network during April. Monthly totals at individual stations ranged from 1.53 inches at Polaris Towne Center (south-central Delaware County) to 5.71 inches at Newark Court House 1NE (central Licking County). Sector averages for the month were as follows: NW = 3.49 inches; NE = 3.63 inches; SE = 3.73 inches, and SW = 3.99 inches. The 4-sector average for the month was 3.71 inches; normal precipitation for April is 3.25 inches at Port Columbus. Port Columbus reported 0.3 of an inch of snowfall for the month, bringing the seasonal total for 2003-2004 up to 25.0 inches. Normal snowfall for April is 1.7 inches, while normal snowfall for the period of October through April is 28.5 inches. The most significant storms to affect the Central Ohio area during April occurred during the periods of April 11-13 and April 20-23.

The rainfall for the storms of April 11-13 was associated with a low pressure system that moved northeastward from Louisiana to Virginia during this period. The heaviest rains with the system fell over the Central Ohio area during the late afternoon of the 12th, with more steady rains falling over the area during the day and evening of the 13th. Total amounts of 1 to 2 inches were common with the event, with isolated areas of 2.0 to 2.5 inches at Battelle Darby Creek Metropark (Franklin County), Newark Court House 1NE (Licking County), and Somerset 2NE (Perry County). The rainfalls of April 19-22 were associated with the passage of a series of fronts through Central Ohio during the period. The heaviest rains fell during the evening of the 22nd. Again, total rainfall amounts in the range of 1 to 2 inches were reported from most of our volunteers with these storms.

Precipitation for calendar year 2004 continues to average well above normal over all four sectors of our network. Annual totals at individual stations range from 8.40 inches at New Dover 1SW (Union County) to 19.44 inches at Newark Court House 1NE (Licking County). The 4-sector averages for the year are as follows: NW = 13.06 inches; NE = 14.20 inches; SE = 14.96 inches, and SW = 14.20 inches. The 4-sector average for the year is 14.10 inches; normal precipitation for the period of January through April at Port Columbus is 10.87 inches. The Palmer Drought Severity Index for the Central Ohio region at the end of April continued to reflect the generally wet conditions in the area, and Columbus area water supply reservoirs were above their normal pool levels at the end of the month.
