A New Age.
As the 16th Century developed there were a number of very important changes.
Science was now telling people how the World was organised. Galileo, an Italian scientist was looking to the stars for the first time with a telescope. By looking at the moons of Jupiter he saw that there was something in the universe that did not go around the Earth! This was against all of the teachings of the Church.
The most important change of all was the introduction of the printing press.
So why was this so important?
1) It would take power away from the rich. It was only the very wealthy and important who could read.
2) If the price of books fell (before the press they were expensive as they were made by hand) then the poor would learn to read.
3) If you could read then you may be open to views that challenged the rich and wanted to bring change.
So as you can see, many powerful people were concerned about this development.
The Tudors saw the end of the Middle Ages and the start of what historians call, the Modern Age.
So what? Why does this bother us?
Well, parliament is now the place where change happens and Kings or Queens have very little real power. The Tudors are the start of this story to explain how this came about. It was the Tudors that introduced the Church of England and made it illegal to be a Catholic. It was because of the Tudors that all of the pressure came about that resulted in the Civil War. So you can see the Tudors still effect us all today.
8S Get to grips with the New Age lesson. Note we are using the projector and laptop to show the Excel sheet in the class. This is a good alternative if the ICT suite is not available for the whole class. Making sure that all get to have a full understanding is Debbie who can be seen helping students on the right hand picture.
