Building up your history skills

When you start studying history in year 7 you will find that we begin with building up the basic skills needed to make progress.

On this page you can read about some of the most important words and ideas.

Anachronism    This is when you get things in the wrong order of time. It can seem a little obvious - A Roman soldier with a wrist watch! But it can be much more involved. When we judge people from the past with our own standards this can be an anachronism.

Chronology    This is the opposite of an anachronism and this is where you put things in the correct order of time.

Primary source. Evidence that comes from the actual time we are studying. this could be a Roman piece of pottery from the empire or, if we are looking at the Second World War a newspaper from this time.

Secondary source. Evidence from after the time we are studying. So a text book about the Romans that was written in the 1990s is a secondary source.

Bias. A one sided view about things.  People are very often one sided. Be careful, it is not always obvious.

Fact. A piece of evidence that is backed up and can be proved to be true.

Opinion. Just one persons view about an event or person.

Cause and consequence. When something happens we need to understand why it happened- this is its cause. We also need to know how important it was and what happened because of it- its consequence.
