President Kennedy 1960-1968

One of the most important and well known US Presidents was John Kennedy. When he became President he was the youngest man to take this office at 43. he was also the first Catholic to be President.

Kennedy gave the impression of being a dynamic yet family man. He was very clear on what image he wanted to present and many presidents since have copied (or attempted to copy) his style.

The image that Kennedy gave was of a dynamic and energetic leader. If you look at the picture below you can see he also took every opportunity to show himself as a family man.

John Kennedy had to prove to the American people that although he was from a rich family and he enjoyed a life-style many of them could only imagine he was able to connect to everyone. It was clear that he had learnt many of his ideas from a previous Democrat leader F.D Roosevelt.

When Kennedy came to power he had many issues to tackle.

One of the first problems was that Southern Democrats hated him and the Republican feared what he would do.

His number one issue was civil rights.

Many Americans had few rights and issues of health-care and education for the poor were high on his list. Black people suffered terribly and in the Southern States a campaign for the vote, and an end to segregation was supported by JFK.

He started by appointing the first black ambassador and black war-ship commander. Some people have criticised him as being a man who made more gestures (open signs) rather than actually changed things. This is a harsh criticism because he did make lots of changes - maybe not as much as he wanted but still significant. We can look now at what this man was really like.
