Mary Queen Of Scots

Mary was a Catholic and she lived in Scotland with her husband Lord Darnley. They had a very strained relationship. Fighting and constant rows were typical of their life. Mary was deeply unhappy and found comfort in the company of her secretary, David Rizzio. Once Darnley had found out he decided to kill Rizzio. Along with friends, he killed Rizzio in a brutal murder. Mary fell out completely with with Darnley, but they did reconcile things and after some time Mary gave birth to James (he was to become the first Stuart King).

Eventually, the hatred between the two returned. Mary began a relationship with Earl Bothwell. He was disgusted with the treatment that Mary received from Darnley, he convinced her to leave the family home at Kirk O'Fields and to make sure she was seen in public!

That night a bungled attempt at making an explosion the cause of death two bodies (Darnley and his servant) was uncovered. The real reason for the deaths was strangulation.

Mary claimed to have no knowledge of her husbands death. The fact that she married Bothwell soon after was too much for the people of Scotland. They rebelled and Bothwell fled to France. Mary was left alone and could only seek help from her cousin, Elizabeth. She gave Mary protection but when Elizabeth found that Mary was still plotting against her she finally signed Mary's death warrant. The danger now was would Catholic countries turn on England?
