Meet the Tudors

Henry VII  The first Tudor King. He beat Richard III at Bosworth and was able to stabalise a country that could have had real problems. This said - his son still had to deal with real debts.     The Tudors is simply the second name that the Royal family had that came to the throne in 1485. Henry Tudor beat the Yorkist King, Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This concluded the War of the Roses - a long running fight between the houses of York and Lancaster. Henry had to deal with a number of problems.

1) Many of the barons were against him and tried to rebel and get him of the throne. he had to be strong and anyone who was found guilty were put on trial before the Court of Star Chamber. Here they would have their land and riches taken off them and this would go towards solving another of Henry's problems- paying for his wars with France.

2) France were a problem to Henry. Much of the land under the control of the English King was in France and the French wanted to get it back.

3) The need to build alliances. Henry wanted his son, Arthur to reign in safety. To make this possible he made an alliance with Spain.

4) The economy. This is how the country is making money. Inflation was a huge problem. Prices were going up all the time and Henry had to make sure that the currency was stable. He made sure that coins were regulated and that people could trust money to have a good level of security.

After Henry VII his son Henry VIII comes to the throne. A fall out with the Pope ends with Henry taking control of it. This helps him, all of a sudden he has lots of riches to pay his massive debts.

The Tudors after Henry see-saw from Protestant to Catholic and back to Protestant. The time is marked by war with the Spanish, plots and adventure. What it does mean in the end is a stable country that is at peace with itself for once!
