Turface is the brand name for a type of fired, calcinated clay for use as soil conditioners and top dressings for play fields.

Perlite is a lightweight, volcanic glass that has been expanded through heat to create a white, porous structure. Perlite is often used as a component of soils designed for seedlings and cuttings. As a component of bonsai soil, it is a poor choice because it is so light that it nearly floats out of the pot when watered. Pumice is a more common choice for bonsai applications.

Peat  retains water and reduces leaching of nutrients in the soil.

Horticultural charcoal is a porous carbon, used as a natural filter to help absorb impurities that could be toxic to roots and to improve soil drainage
