Militia leader planning youth group in Papua
A notorious former East Timorese militia leader is said to be planning to form a
pro-Jakarta youth group in Indonesia's Papua province.
A police spokesman in Papua says Eurico Guterres has asked the Mimika district
chief for permission to set up a group named after the Indonesian flag, the Red and
White Guard.
A human rights court in Jakarta last year sentenced Guterres to 10 years in jail for
crimes against humanity during East Timor's bloody breakaway from Indonesia in
1999.
He remains free pending appeal.
The police spokesman says local authorities, including the military, are still
considering the request.
