Soldier and policeman injured during fighting in Indonesia
An Indonesian soldier and a policeman have been wounded in the latest gunbattle
between Indonesian troops and police.
The shootings took place in West Kalimantan province.
"One policeman and one soldier were injured in the clash and are currently under
hospital treatment," said Lukson Munandar, a police spokesman for West Kalimantan
on Borneo island.
He said soldiers attacked a police station at Mempawah, 65 kilometers northwest of
the provincial capital Pontianak, late on Tuesday.
The attack began with stone-throwing but later degenerated into a gunfight.
Kompas newspaper says the attack was sparked by the refusal of police to hand over
a bus driver who had surrendered to them after hitting a soldier in a traffic accident.
The police separated from the army only in 1999 and since then there have been a
series of clashes.
