Expelled Kurds arrive in Jakarta
Fourteen Turkish Kurds, whose vessel was expelled from Australian waters, have
arrived in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, after being flown in from the remote east of
the country.
Officials say the Kurds were immediately taken to an immigration detention centre,
where they will be questioned before their fate is decided in consultation with United
Nations agencies.
The men told journalists on arrival that they considered themselves to be refugees.
The United Nations refugee agency, meanwhile, has renewed its criticism of Australia
for its handling of the case, saying Australia had breached its obligations under
international law by denying the Kurds access.
