Australia issues general travel warning
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs has issued a general warning for travel
overseas.
The advice urges Australians to monitor security developments and warns of the risk
of terrorist activities and heightened tensions, particularly in the Middle East in the
wake of the Iraq War.
The advisory says the recent attacks in Istanbul, Riyadh, Jakarta and Baghdad
underscore the ongoing threat across the world posed by international terrorism.
It says security conditions can change rapidly and urges Australians to exercise
particular caution over the coming festive season and avoid gathering in large numbers
in public places.
Travellers have been advised to be careful in commercial areas such as shopping
malls, transport hubs, bars, places of worship and other places known to be
frequented by foreigners.
