Prosecutors demand life sentence for Bali bomb-maker
Indonesian prosecutors have demanded life in prison for a man who helped assemble
the deadliest Bali bomb, saying he is guilty of an extraordinary crime against
humanity.
Prosecutors say Suranto Abdul Ghoni's actions took 202 lives and sparked an
economic downturn for Bali and Indonesia.
They say he has been proven guilty of having planned with others an act of terrorism
and of possessing a firearm - crimes punishable by death.
Prosecutors say Ghoni's behaviour during the trial has worked in his favour - including
being polite and admitting he helped pack explosive powder into filing cabinets that
contained a huge bomb.
The bomb was one of two used to attack two crowded nighclubs in Bali's Kuta region
on October 12, 2002, killing 202 people.
Police have arrested about 35 people in connection with the attack, most of whom
have been put on trial.
Three have been sentenced to death and two have been given life sentences.
