THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS – Report No. 396
UNPLEASANT RUMOURS – In the city of Ambon rumours are spreading that
renewed conflict is at hand. For instance it was said that there was a conflict between
military and police personnel in the village of Rutong, South coast of the island of
Ambon; upon checking, however, this proved to be untrue. Others said that on certain
places masses were gathering. Others suppose that some Christians are getting
allergic because of the presence of a considerable number of Laskar-Jihad-like
Muslim teachers from outside, bearded and in long white robes, who recently have
been entering the area in connection with the holy Ramadhan month. Police chief
commander Bambang Sutrisno during an interview on local TV tonight, warned the
citizens not to trust such rumours. And if any was heard, one had to report it
immediately to the nearest police peronnel, who from now on will intensify their
vigilance, especially during the night.
