THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS – Report No. 403
1. BOMB EXPLOSION – In the evening of Saturday, December 13, a home-made
bomb exploded in the Pohon Mangga area, Air Salobar, west end of Ambon city. The
bomb, which was hidden in a flashlight, caused no casualties neither evoked any
subsequent unrest. In its commentary, SCTV commercial TV supposed a link with the
upcoming visit to Ambon by Vice President Hamzah Haz next December 17.
2. MEGAWATI TO VISIT AMBON – Antara News Agency reports that President
Megawati Soekarnoputri has favourably answered to an invitation to come and visit
Ambon next December 28. Thus was confirmed by the chairman of the Halal Bi Halal
and Christmas Committee, Husein Toisuta. The agenda also includes the inauguration
of the new international airport at Laha/Ambon.
3. DOUBTS ABOUT THE SITUATION IN THE NORTH MOLUCCAS – Reports on
the situation in the North Moluccas are very sparse and mostly tell about either
suffering or well-being of refugees. However, a local parish priest we recently met,
spoke of quite numerous bombings of which it may be doubted whether all of these
happen accidentally. Anyhow, in a lot of places people live in fear.
