THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS – Report No. 394
1. POSSO GUNMEN KILLED, OTHERS CAPTURED – "The Jakarta Post" daily
reports that on October 17, security forces shot dead three gunmen that were involved
in the attacks on several villages in the Poso area, Central Celebes. Five others were
arrested by a joint force of police and military troops during a raid on their hideout in
the Beteleme area, Central Celebes. The following day two others could be detained.
According to Central Celebes Police chief BrigGen Taufik Ridha, two of the gunmen –
Saddam (killed) and Habit (detained) – hailed from Lamongan regency, East Java
province. Lamongan is the hometown of Amrozi, Ali Imron and Ali Ghufron, who were
sentenced to death of life in prison for their roles in the Bali bombings.
2. HAWEAR SIGNS IN TUAL REMOVED – At noon today the adat hawear (no
trespass) sign that has been obstructing the bridge from Tual to the main island of the
Kei archipelago since mid-September, has been removed. It was a spontaneous
initiative of the local adat elders and was carried out with appropriate adat ceremony.
