THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS – Report No. 405
1. 15 YEARS IN JAIL DEMANDED FOR SEPARATISTS – On April 20, 2003, police
forces arrested Drs. Jhon Rea, "commander of the RMS Forces" in Ambon, together
with eight RMS members while they were having a secret meeting in Jhon Rea's
house in the neighbourhood of Batubulan/Batugajah, city of Ambon (see Report 363).
The legal procedure against them started before the Ambon District Court towards the
end of October. On December 19, 2003, the prosecutors demanded the nine
defendants to be sentenced from 13 to 15 years in prison on charges of treason and
agitating people to establish a South Maluku independent state. Besides, they had
failed to respect the court during the trial, which was considered as an incriminating
factor.
2. MANUPUTTY IN LOS ANGELES – Detikcom-Jakarta reveals that FKM leader Dr.
Alex Manuputty, who was thought to have left Indonesia for the USA, in fact is in Los
Angeles now. National Police HQ confirms that Manuputty will be arrested when
requested to by the court in Jakarta. Indopos reports that Manuputty – together with
five supporters – meanwhile has twice staged a demonstration before the Indonesian
Consulate of LA, but up to now has not reported to the Consul officially.
