One dead in clash between police and soldiers in Mempawah
JAKARTA (Antara): A clash between Indonesia's military and police in the town of
Mempawah in West Kalimantan province on Tuesday was sparked by a traffic
accident, local military spokesman Col. Marciano Norman has said.
Marciano said in the West Kalimantan city of Pontianak on Wednesday that a soldier
was shot dead and two people were wounded in the incident.
"The clash turned into gunfight after a soldier was hit by a public bus," Marciano said.
The bus driver then surrendered himself to the police office in Mempawah, 65 km
northwest of Pontianak.
However, when the police failed to hand over the driver to the soldiers, they began to
stone the police station which later degenerated into a gunfight.
