Troops kill 10 Aceh rebels
BANDA ACEH, Aceh (AFP): Indonesia's military on Thursday reported 10 more rebel
deaths in Aceh, a day after the government put the province under military rule for
another six months in hopes of crushing a separatist revolt.
On Wednesday the military emergency in the resource-rich province was officially
extended until next May, despite protests from human rights groups and concern by
foreign donor nations.
Troops killed three Free Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels during a skirmish at Blang
Panjo in Bireuen district Wednesday, said military spokesman Ahmad Yani Basuki.
Soldiers seized two Kalashnikov rifles and ammunition and arrested two men, Basuki
said. Local residents said the pair were sons of a woman who had given the rebels
medical treatment in her house.
Troops shot dead another rebel in Bireuen the same day and confiscated a
home-made bomb, Basuki said.
Soldiers gunned down two suspected guerrillas in South Aceh and killed four others in
separate clashes on Tuesday and Wednesday, the spokesman said.
