Malaysian goes on trial for church bombing
JAKARTA (AP): A Malaysian man went on trial Wednesday accused of building a
bomb that demolished a Roman Catholic church here in 2001, killing one person and
injuring 18.
Nurdin alias Nur Misuari was charged with possessing illegal explosives. If found
guilty, he faces a maximum 20 years in prison.
Prosecutors at East Jakarta District Court said Nurdin assembled the bomb that tore
through the Santa Ana church in eastern Jakarta in July, 2001, killing one worshipper
and injuring 18 others.
The indictment gave no motive for the attack. Nurdin was not required to enter a plea
and the trial was adjourned until next week.
In May last year, another Malaysian, Taufik bin Abdullah Hakim, was sentenced to
death for his role in the bombing of a shopping mall in central Jakarta.
