Police find 600 kgs of chemical explosive component in Palu, C.
Sulawesi
JAKARTA (Agencies): Police said Thursday they had found 600 kilograms (1,320
pounds) of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in explosives and fertilizers, at a
house in Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi province.
Police are looking for two people who allegedly owned the chemical and lived in the
rented house in the provincial capital Palu, said East Palu police chief Hermawan.
Hermawan said police did not have evidence that the two had links to terrorism. "We
received information that the two persons are ship crew members and they use
bombs to catch fish," Hermawan told AFP.
The use of explosives to catch fish is common in Indonesia.
The two are now reportedly travelling to South Sulawesi, he said.
Hermawan said the use of ammonium nitrate by the public is illegal in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, police detain 13 suspects over violence in the restive provincial town of
Poso earlier this month.National police chief General Da'i Bachtiar said six other
suspects were killed in shoot-outs with government forces, DPA reported.
Bachtiar said preliminary investigations, including questioning of the detainees,
revealed that some of the rifles used by the perpetrators, including S-16 models, were
smuggled into Sulawesi from the Southern Philippines.
