Remissions for Tommy & 7 Linked to Bali Blasts
Laksamana.Net - Tommy Suharto, Bob Hasan and seven men jailed for providing
assistance to the Bali nightclub bombers received sentence reductions on Tuesday
(25/11/03) as part of the annual tradition of granting remissions to prisoners on the
Islamic holiday of Idul Fitri.
This year, Idul Fitri remissions were given to 36,806 Muslim convicts, enabling 1,518
of them to be released.
Former president Suharto's youngest son Hutomo 'Tommy' Mandala Putra, who is
serving a 15-year sentence for ordering the murder of a judge who sentenced him to
jail for corruption, had his sentence reduced by one month.
A one-month remission was also given to Suharto's former golfing buddy/business
crony Mohammad 'Bob' Hasan, who is serving a six-year sentence for corruption.
Such remissions are peanuts compared to the hefty sentence reductions the two
super-rich criminals were given on August 17 on the occasion of Indonesia's
Independence Day. Back then, Tommy had his sentence reduced by a five and half
months, while Hasan's was reduced by seven months and 20 days.
Also receiving remissions on Tuesday were seven men linked to the October 12,
2002, Bali bombings that killed 202 people. The seven are: Syamsul Arifin, Sofyan
Hadi, Puryanto, Sukastopo, Eko Hadi Prasetyo, Sirojul Munir and Hamzah Baya.
The detikcom online news portal quoted Tulus Widjajanto, head warden of Bali's
Kerobokan jail, as saying each of the men had their sentences reduced by 15 days.
The seven had been sentenced to between three and six years in prison for hiding key
Bali bombers Ali Imron and Hutomo Pamungkas alias Mubarok at a prawn farm on
Berukang island, East Kalimantan province.
Imron and Mubarok, who have since been sentenced to life imprisonment, had
apparently been planning to flee to Malaysia when they were arrested on January 14.
Widjajanto said the seven qualified for remissions because they had already spent six
months in detention, had been well behaved and had not appealed their sentences.
He said a total of 221 inmates at his penitentiary received remissions.
Remissions were not given to another 22 prisoners convicted over the Bali bombings.
