SOME MAYFLOWER TIDBITS

Mayflower was the ship that carried the first Pilgrims to America, in 1620. It was built around 1610 and had three masts and two decks. It measured about 90 feet (27 meters) long and weighed about 180 short tons (163 metric tons). Its master, Christopher Jones, was a quarter-owner.

The Mayflower left America on April 15, 1621. Historians are not certain what happened to the ship after it returned to England.

The Mayflower II, built the way the original Mayflower is thought to have looked, is kept in Plymouth, Mass. In 1957, it crossed the Atlantic in 54 days. The Britans who built the replica gave it to the American people as a symbol of friendship.

WHO ARE THE GIRLS ON THE MAYFLOWER

DID YOU KNOW...
...that there were eleven girls on board the Mayflower when it set sail in October, 1620? The girls ranged in age from less than one year old to about sixteen! Some reports tell us that the men were concerned if the "weak bodies" of the girls (and women) would be able to handle such a long voyage. The rough life the girls would have to endure while establishing a new colony was also a concern.
This led some parents to leave their girls behind, to be sent for later after the Colony had been established. Well, it turned out that the girls had the strongest bodies of them all! Thankfully, no girls died on the Mayflower's voyage. Sadly, one man and one boy did. During the first winter, twenty-five men & eight boys got sick and died, compared to only two girls.
