January 28, 2000.
Here we are on Nicaragua's Pacific coast.
close to Masachapa, at Montelimar
.
Not far from here Henry Morgan and his Buccaneers
attack a rich town called Granada.
They came here after sacking Villahermosa in Mexico,
when they found that their own ships had been captured
by the Spanish so they had to themselves capture
two Spanish ships and four coastal canoes in which to continue
their epic voyage.Sailing 500 miles against an adverse current
to return around the Yucatan peninsular
and continued along the coast of Central America.
They landed on the coast of modern Nicaragua
and again struck inland to attack a rich town Granada.
Morgan earned fame and respect among his friends and enemies
thanks to his successful and profitable attacks on this city.
.
When we arrive at the hotel " Montelimar ",
we are greeted at the lobby by one of the bell hops.
We sat down to check in and were given a cold glass of champagne.
In the meantime they deliversd our laggage to our room.
We were pleased with our room when we walked in,
we immediately walked to the balcony to see
what our view is going to be for the next few weeks ...
the view was great!
. . .
. . .
birds, birds and more birds ....
We hung out at the beach and the pool all afternoons ....
. . .
. . .
We visited Somoza's estate and admired the view ....
the view of the Pacific ...
. . . .
Above views from the beach house of the Somoza.
The hotel was built around the beach house.
Since Somoza's time,
it has been expanded to a stylish resort
in extensive palm tree gardens.
Among its features is enormous open-air restaurant
serving the entire hotel.
.
We had a great time untill the "birds" lasted.
.....
But as you see above, we had to leave our "Nica" girl
and we had to come back home on borrowed horses from
Masachapa.
On the way we visited the capital of Nicaragua,
Managua, also known as the Novia del Xolotolón
(Bride of Xolotlan),
the hottest,city in the country,
located in the lowlands of western Nicaragua,
on the southern shore of Lake Managua.
Managua is the nation's largest city and its principal
administrative, commercial, and transportation center.
Old downtown Managua, showing the only skyscraper in the country.
.
The Pan-American highway links the city
with other important Nicaraguan centers,
and an international airport is here.
Manufacturers include: processed food,
cement, soap, drugs, and textiles.
The Central American University (1961),
the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua,
and schools of medicine and business.
Landmarks include the National Palace and
a monument in Parque Darío to Rubén Darío,
a famous Nicaraguan poet.

.
During the Spanish colonial period Managua remained primarily an indian town, subordinate to
the more populous cities of Granada and León. It became the capital of independent Nicaragua
in 1855 in a move designed to end the rivalry between the two larger cities. Managua was
rebuilt along modern lines after the disastrous earthquake in 1931. Much of the city again
was destroyed by a major earthquake in 1972, after which new housing and a new city center
were built about 10 km to the southwest. The estimated population is one
million, almost a quarter of the nation's total.
