"The Weird Way We Met Each Other" - True-life tales of love that were sparked in the strangest of places

"In eight-grade gym class, I was matched with the tallest boy for a square dancing since I was the tallest girl. I wasn't interested in boys then, so I was grateful the trauma of having to hold hands and do-si-do lasted only a week. Was I surprised when at a party 11 years later, a gorgeous six-foot-six guy asked me, 'Didn't I square dance with you in junior high?' This time, I took quite a liking to John. We got married two year later and now have a very tall little girl."

"When I was in college, I had a suit made out of plaid vinyl. I thought it was cool, but my friends said it was hideous. One day, I was wearing the suit when I spotted in the distance the same plaid walking toward me - it was a girl wearing a skirt of the same material. I introduced myself, we dated, and we eventually married."

"One Saturday, I was wandering around Manhattan and spotted some shoes in the window of a store. A man walked up to me and said, 'You should get leather uppers, a midsize heel, and that kind of sole.' His family owned a shoe business in Boston, he explained. I said, 'If you know so much about shoes, why don't you come along and help me buy a pair?' He did. We went to three different stores until I finally found a style I liked. Can you imagine the patience to do that? A year after our first date, we were engaged."

"I'm an artist, and I've always painted the same woman: tall and slender, with dark, long wavy hair. She was total fantasy - until I met her while I was searching for a deck of tarot cards at her family's New Age bookstore. When I first set eyes on her, it was like seeing one of my paintings come to life, and I felt instantly in love. On my third visit to the shop, I got up the nerve to ask her out to lunch. Six years later, I tell people that you never know what you'll find at that shop. I found a wife."

"I was late for work one morning two years ago as I rushed to the pharmacy. My head was down, and I wasn't paying attention. Suddenly, I heard the screech of brakes. A man in a white Mercedes had nearly hit me. It turned out he wasn't paying attention either. I told him I wasn't hurt, but I could hear him still apologized as I ran in for my medicine. Giles waited until I came out so he could apologize again. Then he asked me out to dinner, and we've been together ever since."

"I've always believed in taking risks, so I place an ad in a local magazine: 'Wondrous woman loves the beach during the day and the city at night. Looks as good in jeans as in an evening gown.' A man called to invite me to his family reunion picnic the next day. He had a sense of humor, so I said yes. Larry turned out to be extremely handsome, attracted to me, and his whole family was wonderful to me! They had no idea this was a blind date. We've been together five years."

"I met the man of my dreams at the dump - yes, among all the trash and rubble. As a publicist for a Florida hotel, I was sent with other staffers on a daylong field trip to the local solid-waste authority to learn about recycling. When we arrive, a tall, handsome man met us to give us a tour. At the end of the outing, I invited him to do a presentation for our management meeting, asking him to come an hour early so we could have breakfast together. Breakfast went so smoothly, we progressed to dinner, and we've been together for the past three years."

"I met my husband when we were both summer postal workers. His mail truck broke down, and the boss sent me out to find him."
-freelance writer

"My husband's mother dialed the wrong number and reached my mother by mistake. She'd been trying to call our town's newcomer's club, and my mom, who'd also just moved to the are, said, 'Oh, I just joined!' My mom invited the woman and her son over for drinks the following night. When I protested, she said, 'Just be nice to him. You don't have to marry him.' But I did six years later - and knew I would the very minute I met him."
