Examples where the Hold-up is Ill-Advised
Here are some reasons for not holding up: (1) Because you are weak in a two suits. You'd probably do well to go up on the first suit and hope the distribution prohibits the setting trick. If you duck a couple of rounds and now the defense switches to the other suit, your goose is cooked. (2) Because going up gives you a second stopper, while ducking may allow the opponents a play that reduces your stoppers to one. (3) Because you have a reasonable chance of running 11 or 12 top tricks. There's no point in holding up with 12 tricks.
