The opening lead was followed by another spade, which brought a defeated contract. Obviously six no trump would have been unbeatable. Instead, declarer was looking a minus 13.7 IMPs, along with three others who bid to the same contract and got the same defense.
Lemme give you a rundown of the whole field: Four were down in 6 diamonds, as just mentioned, 18 were plus six in diamonds, three were plus 6 in a spade slam, for a better score, two were plus 6 in no trump, for no advantage over 6 spades, but what would've been a significant advantage under matchpoint scoring, and one poor fish had decided to bid hearts over 6 diamonds, which can be beat, and even if not beaten probably would've been about an average score instead of . . . instead of minus 1400 for minus 4 imps when 4 confreres were sitting pretty on a plus score (getting that spade ruff) and even the 18 making 6 diamonds would be making less (1390) than the heart bidders coughed up.
I still remember, with a touch of annoyance, I must admit, the woman who scoffed at the simple statement I made to my partner after pulling home a diamond slam, where I mentioned that I gave some thought to pulling it to no trump. "Ach,+ she sneered, "just for 10 more points" she so incorrectly and impolitely spat out. Obviously there's a bigger than a 10-point difference between no trump and a minor suit. Further, the above illustrates one of the most obvious advantages to no trump, which is that you sometimes run the risk of a quick ruff. But I listed 2 or 3, other reasons why no trump slams just might serve you better. Another reason that you can often cash out winners in a no trump slam where you cannot in a trump contract. Fr'instance, you have only one entry to dummy where there's a luscious running suit (a six-card top-heavy suit opposite a singleton), and the opening lead is in that suit! Yikes! In no trump you could run the suit with the top four honors and a split no worse than than 4-2. In a trump contract, you may find that the third round, or even the second doesn't bring you a winner.
It wasn't any of her business, for one thing. If I'm stupid, it's not her place to educate me when I didn't ask her advice.
Further, beside the danger of a quick ruff, I had a few other reasons. One was that you can cash your winners in the order you like in no trump, while sometimes you cannot in a trump contract. (Fr'instance, your only entry to dummy is wiped out on that opening lead.)
Oh, there are a few more reasons. I haven't visited this category for some months, but I still hold that it is quite valid.
